This post has descriptions of each of the assignments due BEFORE the final story map.
Riot Context
Write a two page description of the context and events of your city’s early 20th century riot. You should consider both underlying and proximate causes — how was the city changing in ways that ‘prepared’ it for a riot (or what made a riot possible or likely) and then what “sparked” the riot. Bring a hard copy to class on February 21.
The Literature Review
A literature review is a standard section of a social science research paper. A literature review summarizes relevant research done related topics and to situate your research in a larger scholarly discussion. The purpose of this literature review is to 1) describe how scholars approach the topic of early 20th century race riots and 2) describe any specific studies (scholarly or not) of your case study. This paper should be two pages, which is VERY SHORT, so you need to zero in on the most salient information. Feel free to use some of the material that we have read for class (Abu-Lughod and Jones-Correa seem like good places to start). This means that you can refer to them, but also that you should look at their bibliographies to see if any of their sources might work for your paper. Also look for sources on your particular race riots. This is due February 28.
The Contract
The contract is a clear description of your project and is submitted via a google document that is shared with me and all group members. Share this document with me by Midnight, March 2.
Your contract should include:
- A clear description of your project. You should include the topic of your project and the evidence or data you will be displaying on your map. The topic is more than the specific riot. (if you are mapping events of a riot and aftermath, media coverage of a riot, the differences between scholarly interpretations and contemporaneous descriptions, etc, but you don’t need to have the details of your argument.)
- Who has primary responsibility for the following:
- Data collection (newspapers, public domain images; etc) and organization, including keeping the meta-data in order. This requires a Flickr account (you can also use Picasa, but Flickr is better).
- Introductory text, explaining the map and its argument. This should also include a description of the city before the riot: what about the city was changing to make the riot possible
- Locating points (this is easy if your point is a city, but it might be harder for specific locations in a city)
- Ensuring that there is clear interpretive text for each point on the story map
- Map design (this includes picking a template and layout features, but it also might involve talking to Dr. Patterson about adding a georeferenced historical map if one exists for your city)
- Putting the map together (getting text and images in the right place, putting things in the right order if the story map is narrative-driven)
