This class explores how race and place create each other. This includes.how place and space have shaped our understandings and experiences of race and how race, our own and our perception of others, shapes our experiences of different places and spaces. This semester we will explore issues of race in four particular spheres: schools, national territories and their borders, the internet and social media, and public space and public memory. All students will be assessed on their participation during each of the four modules, which means that you should come to class prepared for discussion. Participation will be assessed for each of the 3 week modules. Students will complete three of the four paper assignments. Everyone will write the first paper on school segregation and then will be able to choose two from the other three papers. All students will help review paper drafts for all four papers. All students will submit a portfolio of their work in the class with a reflection paper and IF they choose, edited copies of their papers with a memo describing how and why they changed their paper. These edits, if substantial, may merit a revised grade for the paper.
